The Tatum Alumni Association was “born” in 1967, the brainchild of Carriebelle Smith, with the assistance of Melba Parks Cardwell and Maleta Scrivner. I came on board soon after. We discussed whether to hold a meeting every year, but decided to meet every two years in the odd numbered year, the first Saturday in August.
We enlisted the help of other alumnus of Tatum High School, the home of the Tatum Coyotes. We gathered all the names and addresses we could find. The first announcement for the inaugural meeting of the Association was drafted and was mailed in June 1967, with a meeting set for the first weekend in August 1967, with a registration fee of $5, which was used to fund the next meeting.
A small but determined group met at the High School Library each week for several weeks to address the envelopes, by hand, to mail the notices, and to plan the upcoming event. The idea was to get someone from each class to address the envelopes for their graduating class, which worked well to some degree, but our core group was left to address envelopes to graduates for which no one locally came forward. Then we chipped in to buy postage. That group was made up of Carriebelle Smith, Escola Travis, Maleta Scrivner, Melba Parks Cardwell, Billye Lynn Peveler, Marcia Mathers Hilburn, Ivalee Baum Thompson, Peggy Sullins Price, Barbara Cardwell Webber and me, Melessia Pior Helberg. I know there are others that I can’t recall that joined us in this massive effort.*
The first meeting of the Tatum Alumni Association was held on Saturday, August 5, 1967, at the American Legion Hall, now the Tatum Community Center. The attendance exceeded all of our expectations, and we had representatives from all of the graduating classes. Prizes were given for everything from the Class with the most graduates attending to the graduate traveling the furthest.
The day began at Noon with the luncheon. It was not a catered affair, but rather a combination of pot luck and contributions. The beef for barbeque was donated and cooked by the men, and the women organized the pot luck. I remember that I brought a pressure cooker full of pinto beans. Local resident alumnus were asked to bring a covered dish, and we had a wide variety of food from tossed salad, potato salad, to all kinds of cakes and pies. Tatum Cash Grocery donated bread for the event, and we chipped in to buy plates and cutlery, with donations from Coca Cola for the drinks. It was a fine luncheon. Thereafter, we had a small amount of money to buy meat, plates, soda, ice and such. But for many years it was supplemented with pot luck dishes. The evening was capped off with a western dance. The band was paid a modest fee. At the first meeting, Carriebelle Smith was elected President, Melba Cardwell was elected Vice- President, I was elected Secretary, and Ivalee Baum was elected Treasurer. After the first meeting, Carriebelle declined re-election and Melba Cardwell was elected President, serving for many years thereafter.

There is a Classmate/Teacher Memorial Page. If we have lost a graduate or teacher, you can email me a picture with their full name, DOB ~ DOD & Class of if you know and I will add it to the Memorial page. This is OPTIONAL not required. Please make sure the picture is legible.
